I’m one of those people that just can’t stop thinking. I have these ideas that just pop into my head for no reason. I could be playing a game, or I could be in bed trying to fall asleep. Sometimes I have a hard time trying to get to sleep because my brain just won’t stop thinking, and most of the time it’s about stupid things.
One day I was sitting around, probably watching TV or something, and this idea popped into my head about being able to light the house with the sun light that was coming in the front window. I must have been around 10 years old at the time. I got to thinking, what if all the walls in the house were mirrors. I could light the whole house and never have to turn on a light. It could be the middle of night, but the sun light would still be bouncing off the walls keeping the house lit. After I thought about it a little more, I figured it wouldn’t work at night, because the speed of light is just too fast, and the light would escape.
I got to thinking about this again. How could I get light to stay in a space after the light source is turned off, and how long would it last? I stared to think about having a light source inside of a sphere shaped object, which was mirrored on the inside. Would this work? Would the light stay, even after the source was turned off?
Then it dawned on me that if I was able to build the thing, and test it; I would have no way of knowing if it were working. How could I view it from the outside? If I was able to view it, that would mean that the light would be escaping, and then the light speed issue would come into play. After the light source would be turned off, even if the light bounced of the walls of the sphere 1,000,000,000,000,000 times it would only last a split second. What if I was able to put a camera inside, would this affect the light? Maybe this will work?
Let’s just say I was to build this thing, and put a camera in it. Then I started it up, and then turned it off to see what would happen. What would it do? If it worked, would the light bouncing off the walls get so hot, that it catches on fire? Could it explode? Would it be like a nuclear bomb? All these things started to pop into my head. Maybe I shouldn’t even think about building something I know nothing about. What do I know about light? Nothing really. Maybe this has already been thought of before and has been proven. I just don’t know, but I believe that under the right conditions light will last forever.
